Shockwave Therapy
Edison, NJ
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Don’t be shocked when you hear the words “Shockwave Therapy”. This procedure has nothing to do with electric shocks. In reality, this procedure is actually safe and gentle, designed to treat any damage to your joints, muscles and tissues in a completely non-invasive manner.
Shockwave Therapy uses low-energy sound waves (or percussions) to create mechanical/physical pulses in the muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissues. These percussions go deep into the body and break down any calcific fibroblasts and scar tissue in the treatment area. Simultaneously, these sound impulses also stimulate tissue repair & regeneration while provoking an inflammatory response. You’ll notice better microcirculation in the musculoskeletal region, along with increased collagen production. Together, this heals the injury in the musculoskeletal treatment site, offering pain and symptom relief.
The therapy, also called Radial Shockwave Therapy (RSWT) or Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), has been in use to treat conditions like Kidney stones for years. But recently, medical research has shown that shockwave therapy can be particularly effective in treating heel pain caused by Achilles tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis. In addition to these conditions, further studies are showing how shockwave therapy can be a great, non-invasive treatment for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. PiezoWave
At Backsmart Wellness Center, we use the PiezoWave piezoelectric device to provide Shockwave Therapy. This device allows us to choose between three modulations to provide the treatment. This includes linear focusing piezo shockwave, point PiezoWave focusing piezo shockwave, and planar piezo shockwave to treat various areas in a quick and consistent manner. The device contains gel pads of varying thicknesses that allow our specialists to customize treatment depth.
The PiezoWave piezoelectric device doesn’t hurt you when the sound waves are directed towards the site of injury. This is due to its direct focusing design. You may feel a minor vibration at the site when the device is activated.

The treatment process at our wellness center
Once your consultation is done, you are asked to lie down on the treatment bed/chair. We don’t use any anesthesia since this procedure is almost pain-free. We plug in the PiezoWave piezoelectric device, apply the gel pads on the treatment site and start the therapy.
Each session lasts about 10 minutes, after which you are told to lie down for 5-10 minutes to help your treatment site feel normal again. Then, you can resume your daily schedule as usual. We recommend that you avoid high-impact sports, games and chores that can put pressure on your injured muscles, joints and connective tissues.
You will need to return for a follow-up session after a week. The number of follow-up treatments depends on the severity of your condition. But generally, we recommend a set of 5 treatment sessions for each patient.
You will begin to experience the pain, swelling and other symptoms reducing as the weeks progress. Our team of experts at Backsmart Wellness Center will be in close touch with you to personalize your treatment and post-therapy care.
