WHO NEEDS TO UNDERGO THE DOT MEDICAL EXAM?

The DOT physical test is a mandatory medical examination that must be undergone by you if:

  • You are interested in applying for a job in the DOT
  • You are driving or operating a vehicle that weighs over 10,000 lbs (if the vehicle is over 26,000 lbs, then a drug test is mandatory)
  • You are operating a vehicle that carries more than 8 people on board
  • You have been diagnosed with diabetes, high BP and heart disease

What are the DOT’s disqualifying points?

While a variety of factors are considered during the exam, typically, the DOT rejects applicants who:

  • Have drugs in their bloodstream (unless it’s a medically allowed drug for your well-being)
  • Have a blood pressure that is above 140/90
  • Have a BMI over 33
  • Have an implanted defibrillator
  • Have any disease or medical condition that can prevent you from discharging your responsibilities at the DOT

Preparing for the DOT physical

One of the best ways to prepare for the DOT – while also improving your health – is to make certain lifestyle changes. These include:

  • Drinking lots of water and staying hydrated
  • Taking your prescribed medication on time
  • Getting your eyes tested and your vision details updated
  • Reducing dependence on alcohol and smoking
  • Reducing consumption of oily or salty snacks
  • Exercising and eating nutritious meals
  • Reducing stress levels by sleeping, meditating, spending time in nature, etc.

These lifestyle modifications – done over the course of a few months before the DOT – can help you reduce your risk of failing the medical exam.

On the day of the exam, be sure to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes, as you may be given a physical exercise test. Dr. Robert Foster will be able to advise you on how to prepare for the DOT, if you come in for a consultation prior to the testing.
